What is Product Placement?
Product placement is a form of advertisement where branded goods or services are placed in an entertainment context usually devoid of ads. The medium of entertainment can vary from film, television series, novels, graphic novel, comic book or even computer games.
Subtle examples of product placement are the Jeso Cuervo Gold in the movie Tequilla Sunrise, Pampers in Three Men & A Baby, Reebok and Pizza Hut in Wayne's World, FedEx and Wilson in Cast Away and Coca-Cola in The Gods Must Be Crazy (coincidentally Coca-Cola own Columbia Pictures). Not so subtle examples are Will Smith, making numerous references to his Converse AllStar shoes in I, Robot. To help with production costs the James Bond franchise has endorsed numerous products including: Rolex, Pulsar, Omega, BMW, Aston Martin, Martini (shaken, not stirred), Stolichnaya, Finlandia, Mount Gay, Bollinger, Heineken, Yin Hao (jasmine tea), Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee and numerous others. In Bond's defense, he has always been a label man, but of late we have had to sit and cringe while he endorses more accessible and out of character products such as: Seiko, Ford, Nokia and Smirnoff.
What is Advertisement Placement?
Unlike product placement, advertisement placement is basically an advertisement within entertainment - a billboard or commercial rather than a character holding or referring to the product itself. A good example of this is in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, where the film lingers on a Coca-Cola billboard.
